East Asian Varieties of Capitalism and Socio-Economic Inequality: South Korea and Hong Kong Compared

This article examines the deepening of socio-economic inequality manifested as dualisation in South Korea and deregulation Hong Kong. It explains extreme manifestations by reference to nature economic co-ordination, organised labour power societal corporatism, politics democratisation. finds that Korea’s legacy state-orchestrated co-ordinated market economy favoured retention a manufacturing core despite globalisation. However, neo-liberal inclinations state big business groups led marginalisation less privileged firms workers. These reinforced defensiveness small but strong organisations, preventing effective corporatism. phenomena are fully understandable only with country’s conservative democratisation divided liberal left political forces. The geo-political also induced identity conflicts overshadowed issues. By contrast, Kong’s coupled absence security concern had allowed radical de-industrialisation 1990s wholesale casualisation 2000s. Divided politics, was unable challenge trend. same pro-China organisations side interests post-1997 electoral autocracy prevented introduction more fundamental reforms.
